Current Open Position: Scientific Venture Fellow

​

Health Innovation Capital’s (HIC) Venture Fellows Program offers a unique entry into the venture capital industry. As an important member of HIC’s investment team, the Venture Fellows will spend 3-6 months working in two critical areas of the fund investment team: Search and Screening (“Origination”) and Investment Management (“Execution”). As a Venture Fellow, one will get experience in evaluating new investments and learning, from the ground-up, how a sector-specific venture capital investor identifies, evaluates, and executes investments in a diverse set of companies. Venture Fellows are responsible for supporting the due diligence and research efforts of a deal team and on occasion will work with portfolio company executives (CEOs, COOs, etc.) to employ HIC’s investment and operating model to drive investor returns. Over the course of her/his tenure with HIC, the Venture Fellow will evaluate hundreds of investment opportunities, gain strong industry and business model expertise, and develop one’s abilities as a venture capital investor. 

 

Search and Screening (“Origination”) 

Venture Fellows are on the front lines identifying and screening deals as well as presenting prospective opportunities to the investment team and General Partners. These responsibilities include: 

  • Perform scientific and market research to help identify new investment trends and research and innovation opportunities within the specific sectors of Cancer, Infectious Diseases, select Rare/Orphan designations. 

  • Deal screening: call and/or meet with potential portfolio companies and to support in the evaluation of said opportunities. 

  • Research industry dynamics. 

  • Analyze and compare viability of science and technology being presented. 

  • Documentation: summarize call notes, enter deals into CRM (Customer Relationship Management that helps organize the opportunities we receive through our pipeline). 

  • Network with peers in other Venture Capital Firms. 

  • Perform initial Due Diligence on pipeline opportunities. 

  • Gather information from the target company and industry experts.  

  • Research and talk to existing references and management team. 

  • Research potential competitors to the target company. 

 

Investment Management (“Execution”) 

Venture Fellows assigned to this role will support all aspects of a deal, from due diligence to execution. With due diligence, as a part of a Venture Team, will produce the initial analytics that lead HIC’s General Partners and Investment Team to pursue or reject a potential investment opportunity. As an opportunity  moves into later stages of analysis, financial modeling, market intelligence, and capital allocation consideration, Venture Fellows will continue to work side-by-side with the Venture Team in executing all aspects of a potential investment including, but not limited to:  

  • Gather information from the target company and industry experts.  

  • Research and talk to existing references and customers of the target company. 

  • Research and talk with technical/business consultants to evaluate the target company’s technology including Ips. 

  • Help to prepare internal investment memos and present to partnership. 

  • The Venture Fellow in this role needs to be proficient in technical diligence being able to understand and provide expert insight on the science being presented. 

  

Credentials 

  • Education: Candidates who either currently have one or more of the following degrees: MD, Ph.D., and MBA. In addition, HIC will also consider candidates who are in the process of pursuing said degrees.  

  • Excellent academic record. 

  • 1-2 years of scientific (laboratory, clinical, translational, epidemiological) research, healthcare operations, healthcare entrepreneurship. 

  • Outstanding analytical skills, detail-oriented, proactive and self-motivated.  

  • Strong knowledge of Excel including advanced function.  

  • Ability to conduct and summarize scientific literature searches to support diligence efforts. 

  • Ability to produce well-designed, professional PowerPoint presentations.  

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Self-starter with a track record of going above and beyond what is asked. 

  • An ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, partners and entrepreneurs. 

  • Venture Fellows will report to and work closely with all members of the Health Innovation Capital team.

Current Open Position: Financial Analyst Venture Fellow
 

The Financial Analyst Venture Fellow (“Financial Analyst Fellow”) will assist in both the Origination and Execution of HIC’s investments and will play a critical role in HIC’s analysis of an investment’s merits based on its unit economics, patient impact, financials, comparable competitors, and ownership dynamics. The Financial Analyst Fellow will also contribute to standardizing HIC’s financial models and templates, which are vital to the firm’s proprietary investment screening and evaluation methodology.
 

Financial Engineering

Financial Analyst Fellows have the unique opportunity to meaningfully contribute to HIC’s quantitative analysis models, which are deployed firm-wide in all investment evaluation and analyses. The Venture Fellow in this role needs to be highly proficient in financial modeling and able to build a financial model based on defendable assumptions. Data Science, data analytics and programming skills are also highly desirable.
 

The key responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Scientific Fellows (M.D.’s, P.h.D.’s, M.P.H.’s, and PharmD’s) to validate investment opportunities.

  • Improve upon HIC’s proprietary models by leveraging proficient/advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

  • Implement 3rd party technology solutions to streamline process and procedures through implementation of programs and APIs

  • Together with senior HIC investment team members, oversee the financial analytics and evaluation of all active investment opportunities in advanced diligence.

  • Perform industry analog and comparable analysis to benchmark valuation parameters for specific prospective investments.

  • Analyze complex data sets to identify crucial financial and business information.

  • Perform market research to help identify new investment and research trends and appropriately valued innovation opportunities within the specific sectors of Cancer, Infectious Diseases, select Rare/Orphan designations.

  • Test, create, optimize, and share strategies, processes, and metrics to continuously improve the process from deal generation to prioritization, to due diligence, to structuring & underwriting and to monitoring and realization to analyze our successes and failures.

Investment Management (“Execution”)

The Financial Analyst Fellow will support all quantitative aspects of a deal, from the due diligence to execution & portfolio monitoring stage. In collaboration with the Investment Team, the Fellow will produce the initial analytics that lead HIC’s General Partners and Investment Team to pursue or reject a potential investment opportunity. As an opportunity moves into later stages of analysis, financial modeling, market intelligence, and capital allocation consideration, the Financial Analyst Fellows will continue to work side-by-side with the Investment Team in executing all aspects of a potential investment including, but not limited to:

  • Assist with the administration of the active investment pipeline: ensure all deal activity is captured in the CRM and that all weekly dashboard reporting is timely and accurate.

  • Research and talk with technical/business consultants to evaluate the target company’s technology, including LPs.

  • Conduct background checks on the current management of the target company.

  • Help to prepare internal investment memos and present to partnership.

Credentials

  • Pursuing or attained an MBA from a top-tier institution, preferably in conjunction with one or more of the following: MD, PhD, MPH, PharmD or a strong healthcare interest/background

  • Background in Data Science, programming or data analytics

  • Excellent academic record and strong analytical and financial abilities

  • 1-2 years of investment and/or investment research experience (VC/PE, investment banking, or investment management) with exposure to financial modeling

  • 1-2 years of healthcare operational experience; preferably with a start-up, healthcare company, or management consultancy

  • Outstanding analytical skills, detail-oriented, proactive and self-motivated

  • Seeking a long-term career path in healthcare venture capital as a Partner

  • Strong knowledge of Excel including advanced functions

  • Experience with cash flow modeling and investment valuation techniques

  • Ability to produce well-designed, professional PowerPoint presentations

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Self-starter with a track record of going above and beyond what is asked
